- Acute febrile diseases with pathogenic
factors at the
Qi
level: High fever due to externally contacted head disorder and excessive
Heat in the
Yang
ming level. It is often used with
Anemarrhena,

Polished rice and
Liquorice-
White Tiger Decoction- Bai hu tang.

- Gypsum has the effect of clearing Heat from the Lungs and thus moderates the
extreme warmth and dryness of
Ma huang. These
two herbs are combined in treating cough with nasal flaring due to externally
contracted Heat.

- Toothache and swelling of the gums due to blazing Stomach Fire, with
Asarum
heterotropoides- Xi xin.

- Lingering fever as a sequelae of febrile disease, or cough with fever in children,
with
Lophatherum gracile- Dan zhu ye.

- Raging Fire caused by deficient Yin: Headache, toothache, and thirst, with
Shu di huang.

- Epidemic Damp Heat toxin: high fever, loss of consciousness, nosebleed, and
rash, with
Xi jiao.

- Burns and eczema, Calcined Gypsum- Duan shi gao is used topically together
with
Huang bai.[5]
- For skin eruptions and ecchymoses and retained high fever due to obstruction
of excessive perverse Heat it can be used with
Rhinoceros
horn and
Scrophularia root-
Decoction for Relieving feverish rash- Hua ban tang.

- For febrile diseases in the later stage with lingering fever, dysphoria, thirst
and red tongue with very little fur, it is used with
Lophatherum
and
Ophiopogon root- Decoction of Lophatherum
and Gypsum- Zhu ye gao tang.

-External usage- Gypsum is calcined (forged) and ground into fine powder for
external use. For non healing of sores with difficulty in regeneration of tissue,
it is often use with drugs having actions of lifting the vital energy, as in
Nine to One Pellet- Jiu yi dan.
