The Chinese softshell turtle is now farmed, especially in China, to support the food industry, and it is the world's economically most important turtle.[3] The shells used for medicine are usually a by-product of food production.[4] This is the most common species raised by Chinese turtle farmers is the Chinese softshell turtle, accounting for over 97% of all reported sales.[5]

FUNCTIONS
GROUP: Tonics- Nourishing Yin
1. Nourishing Yin to remove heat.[2] Nourish Yin and suppress the hyperactive Yang.[1]
2. Calming the Liver to relieve convulsion.[2]
3. Softening the hard lumps.[2]
INDICATIONS
1. Reduce deficiency fever.[1] Consumptive fever and hectic fever due to Yin deficiency.[2]
2. Convulsion due to Yin deficiency.[2]
3. Malaria.[2]
4. Mass in the abdomen, amenorrhea, metrorrhagia or metrostaxis.[2] Soften and disperse lumps. Soften up hardness. Disperse coagulation.[1]
5. Infantile convulsion.
INDICATIONS
1. Yin deficiency with hyperactivity of Fire manifested as fever and night sweating; or for the late stage of febrile diseases with consumption of Yin fluid manifested as night fever; or for convulsion of Yin deficiency type. Periodic fever due to Yin deficiency. Night sweat, twitching.
2. Abdominal lumps. Abdominal mass; recently used for hepatosplenomegaly. Swelling and enlargements of Spleen and Liver, suppression of menses.
COMPARISON between Chynemys reevesii- Gui ban- fresh water tortoise shell and Pelodiscus sinensis- Bie jia.  Gui ban better for nourishing and tonifying. It is more greasy, slowing digestion. Bie jia- better to disperse accumulation.
PREPARATIONS:  Decoction- Back shell 10-20 g  decocted first.
10-39 g (decocted first).[2]  9-24 g.[] Decocted or boiled down into soft extract for internal use, or used as an ingredient of boluses, pills or powder.[2]
