Deafness and tinnitus
Etiology
Deafness and tinnitus can be divided into two types: the Deficiency and the Excess.
The Excess type is usually due to upward perversion of the qi of the Liver and Gall Bladder which affects the sense of hearing. The Deficiency type is usually due to lowering of the Qi of the Kidney, which fails to ascend
Differentiation.
1. Excess type:
Tinnitus: Continuous ringing of the ear unrelieved by pressure.
Deafness: Sudden deafness.
-with signs such as distension and heavy sensation of the head, nasal obsturction, bitter taste in mouth, hypochondriac pain, T- Sticky coating. P- Rolling rapid.
2. Deficiency type:
Tinnitus: Intermittent ringing of the ear which becomes aggravated after stress and strain and is somewhat alleviated by pressure.
Deafness: Gradually worsening deafness.
-with signs such as dizziness, blurring of vision, low back pain, lassitude P- thready.
Treatment
Method
1. Excess type: To restore the sense of hearing by puncturing with reducing method at points of the Sanjiao and Gall Bladder channels as the main points.
2. Deficiency type: To strengthen the Liver and Kidney by puncturing with even movement plus moxibustion at points of the Kidney and Liver channels

Ermen- SJ 21
Tinghui- GB 2
Yemen- SJ 2
Xiaxi- GB 43  These points are on the GB or SJ channels, or are local.
Hand Zhongzhu- SJ 3
Secondary Points
1. Excess type:
Lowering Qi of Kidney: Shen shu- UB 23, Mingmen Du 4, Taixi Ki 3 nourish the Yin of the Liver and Kidney to reduce the Deficient Fire.
2. Insufficiency of Yin of Liver and Kidney: Taichong Liv 3, Sanjinjiao Sp 6
Xingjian- Liv 2 and GB 41-Foot-Lingqi are used to regulate the Qi of the Liver and Gall baldder channels
Tianyou- SJ 16 is a local point used for treament of sudden deafness.
