Hiccup
Etiology
Causative factors:
-Failure of Qi of Stomach to descend caused by irregular food intake and stagnation of Qi of Liver
-Ascending of Qi of Stomach caused by attack by Cold.
Differentiation.
1. Retention of food and stagnation of Qi: Epigastic and adominal distension, T- yellowish sticky coat, P- rolling forceful. There may be distending pain in the chest and hypochondrium, irritability P- wiry, forceful.
2. Attack by pathogenic Cold: Slow and forceful hiccups which may be alleviated by hot drinks. T- white moist coat. P- Slow.
Treatment
Method: Points are mainly selected from the Foot Yangming (Stomach) channel to readjust the function fo the stomach, subdue the ascending Qi and relieve hiccups. For cases due to retention of food and stagnation of Qi, needling with reducing method is advisable. For case due to Cold acupuncture should be combined with moxibustion.

Zusanli- St 36
Zhongwan- CV 12
Neiguan- P 6   These 3 relieve the sensation of fullness in the chest and activate Qi.
Geshu- UB 17
Tiantu- Ren 22  These 3 subdue the ascending Qi
Retention of food and stagnation of Qi:
Neiting- St 44 Readjusts the Stomach and relieves stagnation.
Taichong- Liv 3 Readjusts the Qi of the Liver.
Juque-Ren 14 Eases the chest and diaphragm to check hiccups.
Attack by pathogenic Cold: Shangwan- CV 13 Aplication of moxibustion to this point warms the Spleen and Stomach and eliminates Cold.
